Saaremaa Ühisgümnaasium was established in 1865 and is the oldest upper secondary school on Saaremaa Island

The aim of the school is to give traditional high level secondary education and prepare students for universities.

The school is relatively big (800 students and 50 teachers) and is divided into 3 levels: elementary school (age 7 - 11), basic school (age 11 - 16), and gymnasium level (age 16-19). In gymnasium level our students can chose between 3 study directions:

• Foreign languages and ICT — More humanities like history, foreign languages, and literature. Main languages English, Russian, German, and Latin. Optional languages French, Swedish, Finnish. Also more computer science lessons (especially computer usage as a tool)
• Physics-math — More real sciences like mathematics, physics, computer science (especially programming)
• Nature-math — More biology, chemistry, geography. Special subjects like environmental policy, geology, Estonian plants and animals, etc. Practice camps and trips every summer, individual student research projects, participation in environmental projects and competitions. Also a lot of mathematics.

Behind the curricular work various out-of-class activities and co-operation with other schools is used to educate young people in the Saaremaa Ühisgümnaasium. For example All-Estonian school theatre festival take place every year.
